Description
In this amplitude and energy of a wave models activity, students will use models to explain how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy of the wave in seismic, light, and sound waves. They will explore six models such as an analogy, a diagram, and an experiment to explain this relationship.
This activity can be used as stations, centers, gallery walk style, and more!
- There are 6 models: 2 lights wave models, 2 seismic wave models, and 2 sound wave models.
- The models include an analogy model, an experiment model, a drawing model, and more!
This is such a different activity. Your students will be excited to do some critical thinking!
⭐ Students will look at each model and then explain how the model helps them connect the relationship of amplitude of a wave to the energy of the wave.
⭐ The models can be posted around the room on the wall, in stations, given to individual students/pairs, or whatever way works for your classroom and students.

What’s included in this resource?
- 6 posters will models of seismic waves (2), light waves (2), and sound waves (2)
- students recording sheet
- answer sheet (with editable text version)
- teacher’s guide
*On the student sheet, for each model, there are statements to help clarify the models for the student. They will answer the question, “How does this model help you connect the relationship of the amplitude of a wave to the energy of the wave?”.
This lesson pairs well with NC Standard PS.6.3.1 as well as other state standards dealing with the relationship between the amplitude and energy of a wave.
This is a great support activity for NGSS standard MS-PS4-1.
★ This amplitude and energy of a wave activity goes well after the following lessons:
Mechanical and Electromagnetic Waves
