Description
In this convection, conduction, and radiation models activity, students will “use models to compare the directional transfer of heat energy of matter through convection, radiation, and conduction”. They will explore six models such as an analogy model, a diagram model, and an experiment model to identify the type of heat transfer and explain how it illustrates the transfer of heat through a material.
This activity can be used as stations, centers, gallery walk style, and more!
- There are 6 models of heat transfer: 2 radiation models, 2 conduction models, and 2 convection models.
- The models include an analogy model, an experiment model, a drawing model, and more!
This is such a different activity. Your students will be excited to do some critical thinking!
⭐ Students will look at each model, identify the type of heat transfer, and explain how it illustrates the transfer of heat through a material.
⭐ The models can be posted around the room on the wall, in stations, given to individual students/pairs, or whatever way works for your classroom and students.

What’s included in this resource?
- 6 posters will models of heat transfer – conduction(2), convection (2), and radiation (2)
- students recording sheet
- answer sheet
- teacher’s guide
*On the student sheet, for each model, there is a question to help clarify the model of the student. They will identify what type of heat transfer the model represents (radiation, conduction, or convection), and then answer the question, “How does this model illustrate the transfer of heat through the material?”. There is also a conclusion question at the end to help tie everything together.
This lesson pairs well with NC Essential Standard: 6.P.3.1 (current) and PS.6.2.1 (new standards) as well as other state standards dealing with heat transfer.
This is a great support activity for NGSS standard MS-PS3-3.
