Description
In this ecosystem interactions research project, students will “summarize the relationships among producers, consumers, and decomposers including the positive and negative consequences of such interactions including coexistence and cooperation, competition (predator/prey), parasitism, and mutualism”, research a specific ecosystem and describe at least 3 different ecological relationships in that ecosystem, and create a presentation (using template) to describe these ecological relationships.
This lesson pairs well with this project.

Students can work on this individually, in pairs, or in groups in this ecosystem interactions research project.
Step 1:
Students can choose, or you can assign, an ecosystem that they would like to research. They will research the relationships between the organisms in this ecosystem. Ecosystems included to study in this resource include a savanna, tropical rainforest, open ocean, estuary, desert, tree hollow, and more. There are 20 included in this resource.
Step 2:
Students will research the relationships between organisms in their assigned ecosystems using the provided presentation. They have options to read and watch resources based on their assigned ecosystem. Students can write down research and brainstorm their presentation on the worksheet provided – Ecological Relationships Project Brainstorm.
Step 3:
Students will use the Ecological Relationships Project Template to create their presentation to record their findings. They should discuss at least three different organism interactions in their ecosystem. They must identify the types of relationships, describe the relationships, and provide visuals of the relationships.
Step 4:
After students create their presentation, they can present to the class and/or turn it in to you for grading. A rubric is provided!
What is included in this ecosystem interactions project resource?:
- teacher’s guide
- list of 20 ecosystems and cards with ecosystems names
- Ecological Relationships Project Research Google Slides (and PPT)
- Ecological Relationships Project Template Google Slides (and PPT)
- Ecological Relationships Project Brainstorm Worksheet
- Project Rubric
This lesson pairs well with NC Essential Standard: 8.L.3.2 (current) and LS.8.2.2 (new standards) as well as other state standards dealing with relationships in an ecosystem.
This is a great support activity for NGSS standard MS-LS2-2.
