Learning about the parts of a flower and their functions can be a fun experience for students. Truly, it can! It’s their chance to explore a living thing that can survive, defend itself, and even reproduce. Flowers are truly amazing, and most of them smell so good too!
This is one of those topics where, if you do a dissection, your classroom will actually smell so good!
In this post, I will share some ideas that will help you bring the WOW Factor to your science classroom while teaching the parts of a flower and their functions.
First, I will share some WONDER strategies to help students become internally motivated to learn more about the different parts of a flower and their functions. Second, I will share an interactive lesson that will help your students to learn more about the topic and includes research-based strategies that will help reduce your students cognitive load. Finally, I will share some WIDEN strategies to expand your students’ knowledge!
Let’s do this!

Main Parts of a Flower and Their Functions WONDER Strategies
WONDER strategies are important to implement before you teach a lesson. This will guide your students and help them become intrinsically motivated to learn. Once this is accomplished, the teaching will be easy! Here are some WONDER strategies to try!
Go Outside and Look at the Flowers!
Unless your students have learned this in an earlier grade level, more than likely, most of your students don’t randomly go and look at the parts of different flowers. They definitely are not likely to look at and understand the male and female parts of a flower and their functions.
So, take them on an adventure! You know that I’m a huge fan of taking students outside. They need to see the sunshine.
So, go ahead, take your class outside, and just have them explore the different flowers. Have them to look inside the flowers, write down their observations, and compare different flowers.
Make sure they don’t tear these apart, especially if they are planted by your school. At this point, your students are purely making observations. Tell them that the dissection may be coming later!!

The Parts of a Flower Matching Activities
One of my favorite things to do before teaching a lesson is to give students a chance to explore the vocabulary BEFORE they learn anything. It’s always great to pre-assess students.
- You can create vocabulary cards where students can match the terms with the definitions of whatever you are talking about! So, for this, you will need cards such sepal, pistil, stigma etc. In addition, you will need cards that have their definition.
- Another WONDER pre-assessment activity you can do is have students guess which term goes with which part of the flower. Give students the names of the parts of the flower and a diagram and see what they know! It will be amazing how they work to complete the parts of a flower diagram and their functions.

Parts of a Flower Interactive Lesson
Interactive lessons are a wonderful resource to use to teach science concepts. Why? They teach content on the middle school level while helping students to remember the content!
How? Well, there are researched-based strategies inside the lesson that help reduce student cognitive load.
If students are overwhelmed with too much information at one time, they end up not learning anything at all. So, these lessons break information into segments with embedded activities so that students are allowed to process the information before moving on!

What are the parts of a plant and their functions? In this parts of a flower interactive lesson, students will explore the importance of studying the parts of a flower, flowering plants (angiosperms), the parts of a flower and their functions, and so much more.
Throughout the lesson, there are activities including typing the text box questions, an anticipation guide, exploring outside videos, drag-and-drop activities, and more!
This is not your average parts of a flower and their functions PowerPoint!
You can find this resource in the Bright in the Middle Shop.
You can also find this on TPT.
WIDEN Activities to Explore the Parts of a Flower
Skip the parts of a flower and their functions worksheet and try these!
Dissecting a Flower
To really explore the parts of a flower, one thing that is easy to do is to actually dissect a flower.
It’s so much fun, and the room will smell awesome.
I discuss how to do a flower dissection in this post.
Move on the Reproductive Structures and Plant Defense
Want to discuss the importance of the parts of a flower in other ways? Go ahead and move on to sexual reproduction in flower plants and their defenses!
This will really widen and expand their knowledge on the importance of knowing the parts of a flower and their functions.
Help your students master science content!
