Description
In this cell structure and function activity, students will “use models to explain how the relevant structures within cells function to support the life of plant, animal, and bacterial cells”, use clues to determine which model best represents the cell structure function, and more!
✅ Download the preview and check out the sneak peek inside!
- The teacher will place 12 model cards around the room representing different cell structures.
- Students will use their clues (on the student sheet) to find which function matches which cell structure.
- They will then identify whether it is found in animal, plant, and/or bacterial cells.
- Then, they will write what else they know about the structure.
- Finally, they will make a sketch of the structure.
Looking for an extension? After students complete the scavenger hunt, there is an additional worksheet with 3 questions that allows students to explain how the cell structures work together to support the life of the cell.
The following lessons pair well with this activity:
What’s included in this cell structure and function activity?
- teacher’s guide
- twelve model cards modeling different cell structures: cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts, vacuoles, cytoplasm, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and centrioles
- student sheet with clues and sections for students to fill out including: “#”, “found in (animal, plant, bacterial?)”, “What else do you know about this structure?”, and “sketch”.
- answer keys!
- extension worksheet with three questions
This lesson pairs well with new NC Essential Standard LS.7.1.2 as well as other state standards dealing with cell structures and functions.
This is a great support activity for NGSS standard MS-LS1-2.
