Description
In this introductory activity, students will use models of atoms and elements to illustrate that matter is made of atoms and elements and that they are “distinguished from each other by the types of atoms that compose them”.
✅ Download the preview and check out the sneak peek inside!
Included in this atoms and elements introduction activity:
- 8 cards that model different atoms (color and b & w)
- 8 cards that model the elements the atoms make up (color and b & w)
- student worksheet
- student worksheet key example
Students will come out with the following takeaways:
- Atoms are different from each other based on their subatomic particles. If you want to introduce students to protons, neutrons, and electrons, feel free!
- “Matter is made of atoms and elements and are distinguished from each other by the types of atoms that compose them”.
- If you want to make students aware at the end, you can tell them that the number of protons in an atom determines the atom/element.
⭐ After students complete this activity, you could following up with teaching atoms or atoms and elements.
This lesson pairs well with NC Essential Standard: 6.P.2.1 and other state standards related to atoms and elements. This will align with NC new standard PS.6.1.1.
This is a great support activity for NGSS Standard MS-PS1-1.
