In these EASY TO SET UP physical and chemical changes lab stations students will “construct an explanation to classify changes in matter as physical changes or chemical changes that are the result of a chemical reaction”. Students will rotate through 6 stations to classify changes as physical or chemical and explain their reasoning.

These six stations are:
- Salt and Water Mixture
- Rusted Nails
- Browned Banana
- Cornstarch and Water Mixture
- Baking Soda and Vinegar
- Crumpled Paper
What will your students do in these physical and chemical changes lab stations?
- In groups, students will rotate through stations (about every 4-5 minutes) that you have set up (teacher directions included).
- They will follow the easy lab directions.
- They will record their observations, whether the change is physical or chemical, and construct an explanation to clarify.
What simple materials will you need?
- small beaker or clear cup
- water
- salt
- plastic spoons
- paper towels
- rusted and non-rusted nails
- magnifying glass (optional)
- a browned banana
- a plate
- cornstarch
- bowl/container
- rubber gloves (optional)
- graduated cylinder (100 ml)
- funnel
- baking soda
- vinegar
- measuring spoon
- paper
