Description
1. STEM Activity Hook: In this hook, your students may or may not have background knowledge about the different weather instruments, but this activity will be a great introduction for all students regardless of their prior knowledge. This hook will, in fact, serve as a pre-assessment. Students can choose from a variety of materials that you provide to create a weather instrument of their choice. They may not know the name yet, but they can create an instrument that would measure something in the atmosphere. Suggested materials and an editable classroom worksheet are included.
2. Weather Instruments Lesson PowerPoint: This lesson includes information on 9 weather instruments including: thermometer, barometer, hygrometer, anemometer, wind vane, rain gauge, weather balloon, weather satellite, and windsock. Each slide includes what each tool measures along with supplemental information for students to gain a better understanding of the instrument. All text in the PowerPoint is editable.
3. Interactive Notebook Flap book for Notes: Students can glue this into their interactive notebooks in order to collect notes from the lesson. Instructions on how to assemble are included. There is an example in the preview.
4. Weather Instruments Sort: In this activity, students may cut out pictures and descriptions and then sort them into the correct category. Cut-and-glue activities are very engaging! This is an activity that they could complete for classwork as an individual or in pairs. You could grade this as a classwork assignment or have students glue it into their notebook as a part of their notes. How you use it is up to you!
5. Weather Instruments Homework: This homework includes 9 matching problems that review what each weather instrument measures and also a discussion question to help improve your students’ scientific literacy. The answer key is included.
