I’m so excited! Why? Well, the Summer Science Movie Challenge has started! This is the first summer that I’m doing this, so come on and follow on the journey!
So, what is the Summer Science Movie Challenge? Well, as you know, as a teacher, you don’t have a lot of time during the school year to just watch movies all of the time. Maybe you are interested in showing a movie in your classroom that relates to the topic, but you don’t have time to preview the movie first? Well, in this challenge, now is your chance to watch some of those movies so you’ll be prepared for next year!
Or maybe you just want some new movies to watch or want to watch some that you haven’t seen in a long time!

The Challenge:
What is the actual Summer Science Movie Challenge? The goal is to watch AT LEAST 10 science movies this summer from this list. There are movies for Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth Science. The challenge will run from June 3rd – August 1st. If you complete the challenge, you will have a chance to win a $100 Amazon Gift Card!! Once you join the challenge, there will be more details to come!
The Movie List:
The list of movies includes G and PG movies. As a middle school teacher, I only liked to show these movies to avoid any controversy as well as acknowledging the fact that middle school students are just kids and there is some stuff that they don’t need to be exposed to. I do have a list of PG-13 science movies as well that I will share. There are some good ones! You can always show clips to your students that really tie in with the content that you are teaching.
The “EXTRA” Challenge
Watching movies is fun anyway, but you can make this challenge even more exciting. Here are some ideas! I’m all about being “extra”!
Theme Night
Have a theme night.! For example, one of the movies is “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs:. Have some fun themed food to go with it! Have some spaghetti and meatballs with ice-cream sundaes (The ice-cream raining down was one of my favorites!) You could also have mini cheeseburgers to represent the the cheeseburgers from the first of the invention. If you have kids of your own, they would absolutely love this, but as an adult, I’d love a themed meal myself!
Family/Friend Movie Night
Have a “movie night”. Do the old-fashioned popcorn, candy, and soda, and enjoy a good night with your friends or family to watch a movie. When was the last time you watched some classics like “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”? That would make a perfect movie night!
Have an Outdoor Movie Night
Why not watch a movie outside? I have never done this at my own house, but this is the summer to make it happen!
I’m still in the process of making this happen, but if you join the journey, I’ll keep you updated!
There are some inflatable outdoor projector movie screens. There are one’s with a stand. There are mini projectors and other projectors! There are also some fun ideas on Pinterest! I found this resource by Heathered Nest and this by the Shabby Creek Cottage.
There are so many ideas!
Pair it With a “Field Trip”
Just like in the classroom, after you watch a movie, treat yourself to a “field trip” on your own or with friends and family! For example, after watching “Fly Away Home”, you can go to a local bird park or zoo with a bird sanctuary! There are a lot of places that have programs about bird migration and conservation!
If you don’t have a local place to go to, there are many virtual field trips!
Pump Yourself for Movie Time
What is something that movies have? Soundtracks! So for the day leading up to watching a movie, you can pump yourself up, or just enjoy the music that will be in the movie. I would highly suggest doing this before watching the movie “The Lion King”. That soundtrack has some of the best songs of all time! You can either listen to the old one or the new one!
This is especially fun if you have kids. Not that they won’t be excited to watch a movie. It just makes the time extra special!
Those are just 5 ideas to make the challenge even more exciting than it already is! Be sure to follow on Instagram and Facebook to see how my personal challenge is going and to get more ideas because I HAVE MORE!
If you have not grabbed the movie list yet, grab it here! Share the challenge with a friend!
