This Middle School Science Teacher Blog – Behind the Scenes
So, I’m the face behind Bright in the Middle. I’d like to share a little bit more about myself and what this business is all about!
The Business
What does Bright in the Middle actually mean? If you’ve followed my journey, it actually took me a while to come up with a brand name for my business, but it finally came to me!
My first “brand names” mainly started with my name, some various other “sciency” names, and then variations of my name, but if finally hit me one day what I wanted my brand to represent.
So, bright has many meanings. I’ve been labeled as “bubbly”, and I love all things bright. I mean, when I got married, my colors were BRIGHT orange and BRIGHT pink.
❇︎ So, first of all, bright means bright colors. I love all things that are brightly colored. I struggled with the colors in my resources and such because I wanted to please everyone. But now, I’m sticking true to what I love!
❇︎ Second, bright means smart. I want to make sure that my resources and tips are rigorous, aligned to standards, helps teachers increase their pedagogical content knowledge, and motivates students to be bright!
❇︎Last, and definitely not least, I want to help others to come to see God’s bright light and see the impact that He can make in your life. God is great!
❇︎ Well, you may have guessed what middle means. It means middle school! I taught middle school math and science for several years. I have experience teaching at the community college and university level as well, but my heart lies in middle school.
The Face Behind the Business

My name is Kayla, and I have a passion for all things middle school! I have a Ph.D. in STEM Education with a focus in science education. I do have teaching experience, as I mentioned before, but I also have some other experience that has help me to build a knowledge base to create rigorous, relevant, and engaging resources as well as the ability to help many teachers out with a variety of things.
I’ve had experience as a university supervisor for student teachers, been a cooperating teacher myself, and have researched and published literature on teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge.
Saying all of that…my heart totally lies in middle school students and helping middle school teachers teach these wonderful students. I currently am a full-time STEM Coordinator/coding teacher at a local middle school and love what I do!

Ok, that’s the background behind Bright in the Middle, so what is so special about the business and this middle school science blog?
Well, as a business, we strive to provide VALUE to anyone and everyone that “stops” by the website. As I teach, or help other teachers at my school, I want to share what has worked in my classroom and just some other ideas that I want to try!
I really strive to make my resources and the other activities in my classroom ENGAGING, but I also want to make sure that learning is not sacrifice in the process!
I believe in SO many things in the classroom. I believe that you should have some sort of 5E lesson plan, or something like it when you teach. You must start with ENGAGEMENT. I believe in fun! I believe in rigor! I believe in research-based strategies! I believe in self-paced learning, and I could go on and on!
There are so many more ideas I have to share!
