You know that point of the year where you are just looking for some end of year science projects and activities to carry you through the end of the school year? Well, if you don’t have anything in mind, I’m here to give you some ideas!
Some of these may be unconventional for end of year science activities, but you may find something that will fit perfectly in your classroom with the time that you have left.
Let’s check them out!
Looking for review activities instead?

National Donut Day Activity
This is one of my favorite activities to do at the end of the year. National Donut Day happens on the first day of June each year. You may or may not teach on this day, but let me tell you, it doesn’t hurt to do this activity a few weeks early!
Who doesn’t love donuts, right?
In this activity, students learn about the history of this day, about the differences between a cake and yeast donut, they will complete a short math activity, and for the best part…they will explore what yeast is by seeing how yeast, sugar, and water react together.
Even middle school students get grossed out (and fascinated by) living organisms being used to create donuts.

Ecosystem Relationships Research Project
Maybe you want to work on some projects that you didn’t get a chance to do during the school year? There are so many projects to choose from during the year, but there is never enough time to do them all.
Why not try them at the end of the year?!
I’m well aware that it is like pulling teeth at the end of the school year, so getting your students to do an actual project related to content can be a challenge. This one, however, (and some others that I will talk about) is fun!
There are some NEAT organism interactions. Some are “boring”, but some are so very fascinating!
- In this research project, students can choose an ecosystem (such as a tropical rainforest, open ocean, or a tree hollow), and then research the relationships in the ecosystems.
- The research links are already created for you! Students will have an option to explore 2 videos and 3 readings to search for these relationships.
- Then, there is a project template they can use to record their findings to share with the class.
Not interested in this project for an end of year project idea? It’s all good! What projects did you skip this year due to lack of time that you want to try now? Do those!
There are many easy end of year science projects to try out!

Punnett Squares Animal Project
This is another one of my favorites! It’s not, per se, an end of the year activity, but it’s so much fun, your students won’t mind!
This is really perfect for those students that will be learning more about genetics in the next grade level.
In this project, students will create a creature/animal using certain genotypes that they will discover using two coins. Students will then get with another classmate to discover what both of their animal’s offspring will look like through Punnett squares! Students will then draw four offspring based off of those Punnett squares.
Students really get to show off their creativity with this one!

Chicken Wing Dissection
You know what else is difficult to do during the school year? Dissections! They are so worth doing, but sometimes, with school events, sports, and everything else, it’s just hard to fit them in with the schedule.
Once testing is over, and you have a bit more time, it’s great to throw in a dissection that you didn’t get to do when teaching the content.
The chicken wing dissection is really neat! It’s a great way to show off how the skeletal and muscular systems work together.
No worries if you are concerned about the germs and such. You can always do this as a demonstration or show the video of the dissection for students to observe!

End of the School Year Task Cards
Last but not least…maybe you are looking for something that’s a little different? These task cards are SO flexible.
There are twenty activities that students can do that help get their creative juices flowing.
Some examples include:
- creating an acrostic poem to share summer break plans
- writing a letter to a teacher they may have next year
- drawing a picture to represent something they have learned this school year
